Mayor Andes and Denville Township are inviting residents to gather at Flicker Terrace on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM for “Light Up The Night,” a Revolutionary War tribute marking Denville’s role in the fight for American independence.
About the Event
The evening is part of Denville’s ongoing Semi Quincentennial programming, a series of events honoring America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Local officials have spent the past year highlighting Denville’s direct ties to the Revolutionary War, and this June 23 gathering is one of the bigger public moments on the calendar.
Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend.
The Battle of Springfield Connection
Vito Bianco of the Denville Historical Society will give a historical presentation on the Battle of Springfield, fought on June 23, 1780, in Union County. The battle effectively ended British military ambitions in New Jersey and stands as one of the last major engagements of the Revolutionary War in the northern colonies.
For Denville, the date is no coincidence. On that same night in 1780, a critical signal flashed over Morris County skies.
Beacon Hill’s Role
Beams of light will illuminate the night sky at Flicker Terrace to mark the exact spot where, on June 23, 1780, a warning beacon was lit atop what is now known as Beacon Hill in Denville. The beacon served as a signal to neighboring outposts of approaching British activity, specifically alerting forces during the Battle of Springfield.
The British never advanced into Morris County following the Battle of Springfield, effectively ending their campaign in New Jersey.
A Word from the Township
“This event offers our community a meaningful opportunity to honor Denville’s place in Revolutionary War history and reflect on the courage and communication systems that helped shape our nation’s fight for independence,” a Denville Township official said.
