Beach Street in Rockaway Borough will close to through traffic on or about Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, while Morris County rehabilitates the Beach Street Bridge over the Rockaway River.
The county expects the job to take about three months, weather permitting. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on regular business days, Monday through Friday.
Drivers will be routed onto a signed detour of roughly 1.75 miles using East Main Street, Jackson Avenue, Union Street and Stickle Avenue. Anyone who runs errands or commutes through that stretch of Rockaway Borough should expect delays and plan an alternate route before heading out.
The bridge is a single span steel girder structure built in 1970. Morris County says the structure itself is still sound, but the concrete driving surface has worn down over the years and repeated patching has not stopped potholes from returning. Replacing the deck outright was judged the more practical and cost effective fix. Crews will also sandblast and repaint the bridge’s steel girders to protect them from corrosion going forward.
The project carries a price tag of $1,268,008 and is being handled by Colonnelli Brothers Inc. of Hackensack under contract with Morris County.
It is the third county bridge project to reshape local traffic in as many weeks, following the Morris Avenue Bridge deck replacement in Denville and the Three Rivers Drive Bridge replacement in Jefferson Township.

The work is the latest in a string of county road and bridge projects affecting local drivers, including the Morris Avenue bridge closure in Denville and Sussex Turnpike paving in Randolph.
