Drivers traveling through Riverdale and Montville on I-287 southbound are facing significant delays after emergency lane closures were implemented due to buckling concrete caused by bridge joint expansion.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) reported that two separate sections of I-287 southbound have been impacted. At mile marker 52.6 in Riverdale, just south of Route 23, the right lane has been shut down. The center and left lanes remain open to traffic in that area.
Further south in Montville, more severe closures were reported. At mile marker 49.3, just beyond the Brook Valley Road Bridge, both the left and center lanes were closed. As of Tuesday afternoon, NJDOT crews were able to make temporary repairs, reopening the right lane and shoulder around 4:30 p.m. to help ease congestion. In the meantime, motorists were allowed to use the shoulder as a travel lane.
Crews are continuing repair work at both locations. It is still unknown how long the full restoration will take. Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and plan for potential delays while traveling through the affected areas.
