Denville Township has been named one of the 10 safest cities in New Jersey for 2026, according to a new report from SafeWise.
The home security research company released its annual New Jersey Safest Cities ranking on January 30, 2026. Denville Township came in at #10, alongside Vernon Township at #1, Bernards Township at #2, South River, Barnegat Township, Dumont, New Providence, Hopatcong, Oakland, and Madison. The 2026 rankings are based on the most recent FBI crime data, covering calendar year 2024.
Denville reported a violent crime rate of 0.2 incidents per 1,000 residents in 2026, compared to 0.0 in both 2025 and 2024. The township’s property crime rate held steady at 4.2 per 1,000 residents, down from 5.5 in 2024. Denville’s population is listed at 17,546. The township moved down four spots from last year’s ranking, but still secured a place in the top 10 in a year where 151 New Jersey cities met the criteria for ranking.
Vernon Township held the #1 spot for the third year in a row, and Bernards Township held #2 for the third year in a row. The state as a whole continues to rank well below national averages. New Jersey’s violent crime rate sits at 2.64 incidents per 1,000 people, lower than the national average of 4.43 and the seventh lowest in the country. The state’s property crime rate of 15.88 per 1,000 is the fifth lowest nationwide. No murders were reported in any of the 10 safest New Jersey cities, and 80 percent of those cities reported zero rapes.
The ranking lines up with what residents have been seeing locally. The Denville Township Police Department’s most recent monthly review logged 3,204 calls for service and 269 community policing events in March 2026.
