How to get a Denville library card

Cards are free for Denville residents, teachers and staff at Denville K-12 schools, and non-resident students who attend school in Denville. Apply with the online library card application on the library’s website and staff will follow up. You need a card to borrow materials, to use the library’s digital content and to reserve museum passes. If you do not fit those groups, call the library to ask about your options.

Pillar Libraries, the new name for MAIN

On Oct. 5, 2026, the MAIN Library Alliance, the shared catalog network Denville belongs to, became Pillar Libraries. The network links dozens of public libraries in Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. What changes for you:

  • Old mainlib.org links now redirect to pillarlibraries.org.
  • The mobile app is renamed Pillar Libraries (NJ); you do not need to re-download it.
  • Hold, renewal and overdue notices now come from @pillarlibraries.org addresses, so add that domain to your safe senders list.

You can still search the Denville catalog, place holds and manage your account at the library’s online catalog. For items outside the network, the library links to JerseyCat for interlibrary loan.

Ebooks, audiobooks and streaming

A Denville card unlocks Libby for ebooks and audiobooks and Hoopla for streaming movies, music, comics and ebooks. The library’s Digital Content page also lists free resources for genealogy, job searching, test prep, language learning and legal research.

Museum passes

Adult Denville residents with a card in good standing can borrow passes that cover general admission at these museums:

  • Battleship New Jersey (2 adults, 3 children)
  • Brooklyn Botanic Garden (2 adults and accompanying children)
  • Children’s Museum of Manhattan (4 people)
  • Historic Morris County sites: Fosterfields, Historic Speedwell and Cooper Gristmill (2 adults, 3 children)
  • Insectropolis (2 guests; under 2 free)
  • Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum (2 adults, 2 children)
  • Montclair Art Museum (2 adults and family children under 18)
  • Morris Museum (2 adults, 3 children ages 3 to 18)
  • Museum of Modern Art (5 guests free)
  • Museum of the American Revolution (up to 2 adults, 4 children)
  • Newark Museum of Art (2 adults, children under 17)
  • Storm King Art Center (2 adults, 4 children under 18)
  • USS Constitution Museum in Boston (up to 9 people)

How it works: reserve by phone at (973) 627-6555 or at the circulation desk. You get one pass per museum every 30 days and one pass per household at a time. Pick it up the day before or the day of your reservation with your card, keep it up to three days, and hand it back to a staff member, not the book drop. Late passes cost $5 per day. Passes do not cover special exhibits. Separately, Liberty Science Center gives library cardholders $3 off a full-price ticket or 10 percent off a membership.

The library also runs virtual author talks, virtual art and history lectures and online cooking classes. Teens and tweens get their own Take and Makes and events, such as escape rooms. The full schedule is on the library calendar.

Meeting room and study space

The library has a meeting room that hosts programs and serves as a polling place on Election Day for Denville Ward 1, Districts 1 and 2. The library’s website does not list bookable private study rooms, so ask at the desk about quiet space before you plan a group study session.

Friends of the Library book sale

The Friends of the Denville Library run the annual used book sale. The 2026 sale was held June 26 to 28 at Town Hall, 1 St. Mary’s Place, with books, movies, music, audiobooks and video games. The library accepts donations of gently used items two boxes or bags at a time. Dates for the next sale have not been announced; check the Friends page on the library’s website.
