Denville government: mayor and township council
Denville is governed under the Faulkner Act using the Mayor-Council Plan F. The Mayor is the chief executive, the seven member Township Council is the legislative body, and a Business Administrator runs day to day operations.
Mayor Thomas W. Andes has served since January 1, 2012. His current term runs through December 31, 2027.
The Council has seven members: four elected by ward and three elected at large, all serving four year terms on staggered cycles.

Denville property taxes
Property tax bills are mailed once a year in July and contain four quarterly payments.
- Quarterly due dates: February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1
- Grace period: payments not received by the 11th day are subject to interest, and postmarks are not accepted

- Delinquent interest: 8 percent per year on the first $1,500 of a delinquency and 18 percent per year on any amount above that, plus a 6 percent penalty on any delinquency over $10,000 unpaid at the end of the fiscal year
- Appeals: current year appeals go to the Morris County Board of Taxation by April 1, and Added or Omitted Assessment appeals by December 1
Due dates can shift when the county tax rate is certified late. Denville Now reported that the township extended its grace period through Aug. 26, 2026 after 2026 bills were delayed, and that a tax lien auction opens Sept. 8 and closes Oct. 8, 2026. Check current notices before assuming a standard deadline.
Denville garbage and recycling schedule
Garbage collection in Denville is twice a week and depends on which side of U.S. Highway 46 you live on.
- North of U.S. Highway 46: Tuesday and Friday
- South of U.S. Highway 46: Monday and Thursday
- Collection begins at 6:00 a.m. Put out up to two 30 gallon containers plus one bulk item per pickup. Loose items must be bagged or in cans, not cardboard boxes.
- No collection on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Recycling is dual stream on alternating weeks, so paper and cardboard are collected separately from commingled cans, bottles and plastics. Denville accepts plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 only. Plastic bags, film wrap, Styrofoam, hangers, food waste and shredded paper never go in curbside recycling. Residents can look up their exact pickup days by address using the township’s Recycle Coach tool.
The Denville Recycling Center at 140 Morris Ave. takes e-waste, metal and white goods, used motor oil, tires, bicycles, brush and grass clippings, and rechargeable batteries. Getting around Denville
Denville station on Estling Road is one of the busier commuter stops in Morris County. It sits at the junction of NJ Transit’s Morristown Line and Montclair-Boonton Line, with service toward Hoboken Terminal and New York Penn Station in one direction and Hackettstown in the other. Denville is also served by Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 46 and Route 53, which is what earned the town its Hub of Morris County nickname.
