DENVILLE, NJ — Denville Public Schools proudly recognized the recipients of the 9th Annual Denville Public Schools Person of the Year Awards, sponsored by the Combined PTAs and the Denville Education Foundation.
This annual recognition celebrates individuals who go above and beyond for Denville’s PK-8 students and make a meaningful and lasting impact on the students, schools, and broader Denville community. The nomination process was open to the general public during the month of April, and the district received 120 nominations. The awards were announced and presented at the May 11, 2026, Board of Education meeting.
Each recipient received a commemorative plaque and $200 in gift cards to Denville businesses in appreciation of their contributions.
This year’s honorees are:
Student of the Year: Amelie Schey
Amelie Schey was selected as Student of the Year for her outstanding work as student director of the Valleyview Middle School musical. Her leadership, dedication, creativity, and commitment helped support a successful production and made a positive impact on her fellow students.
Community Member of the Year: Erika Dates
Erika Dates was recognized as Community Member of the Year for her exceptional support of Valleyview Middle School students in her role as PTA President. Erika consistently goes above and beyond to support students, staff, and families, and her efforts have strengthened the school community in countless ways.
Staff Member of the Year: Melissa Spellman
Melissa Spellman, a special education teacher at Riverview School, was named Staff Member of the Year. She was recognized by her students as a life-changing teacher whose care, dedication, and commitment have had a powerful and lasting influence on their lives.
“We are extremely proud to recognize Amelie, Erika, and Melissa as this year’s Person of the Year Award recipients,” said Dr. Steven Forte, Superintendent of Denville Public Schools. “Each of them represents the very best of our school community. Their leadership, service, and dedication reflect the spirit of Denville and the positive impact one person can have on others.”
