The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) has announced its 2026 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off Event Days, offering Morris County residents four opportunities to safely dispose of common household chemicals and other hazardous materials.

All events will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are open to Morris County residents only. Participants must show proof of address, and commercial vehicles are not permitted, the MUA said.

2026 HHW drop-off schedule (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

  • Saturday, April 25 – Jefferson Township D.P.W., 1033 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong, NJ 07849

  • Saturday, October 24 – Pequannock Valley Park, Marvin Road, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444

Acceptable materials

The MUA said acceptable materials include items such as aerosol cans, automotive fluids, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, household cleaning products, oil-based paints, stains, lacquers, varnishes, paint thinners, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, fire extinguishers, and certain batteries including lead acid, button cell, lithium-ion, and rechargeable batteries. The list also includes propane tanks of 20 pounds or less and asbestos (100-pound maximum, wetted, double-bagged and taped).

Materials that will be turned away

The MUA said some materials will not be accepted, including alkaline and carbon zinc batteries, business waste, compressed gas cylinders, containers larger than 5 gallons, empty containers, explosives, medical waste and sharps, radioactive materials, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, unknown or unlabeled materials, and used consumer electronics (e-waste).

Residents are also advised that water-based, latex, and acrylic paint is not accepted at HHW drop-offs. The MUA noted that latex paint should be dried out and placed in regular trash.

The MUA said these events are designed to keep hazardous materials out of the regular waste stream and protect local waterways and the environment by ensuring proper disposal.
