Outfront Media has withdrawn its application to build an electronic billboard roughly 90 feet tall at 2 Indian Road in Denville, and the public hearing that had been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026 is canceled, the township announced Oct. 2.

The township’s notice said the company pulled the application in its entirety. No reason was given.

The proposal had been in front of the Denville Zoning Board of Adjustment since last fall, with the hearing carried from Oct. 8, 2025 to May 6, 2026 and again to July 1, 2026. According to the board’s July 1 agenda, Outfront sought preliminary and final site plan approval and a use variance for a sign about 90 feet high with a 644.8 square foot multi-message advertising face and a 672 square foot static on-premise sign. The company also requested bulk variances covering the sign’s height, its area and the message changes on an electronic display.

The billboard was aimed at drivers on Route 80. Minutes from the July 1 session show residents of Merrie Trail, Lenape Trail and other nearby streets pressing the applicant’s witnesses on how much of the sign and its light would be visible from their homes. Board members asked for a revised photo exhibit, and the hearing was carried to Oct. 7.

The board’s posted agenda for Oct. 7 now lists no public hearings. Instead, it includes a resolution of withdrawal for the Outfront application, case BA/PSP/FSPV 24-18. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Denville Municipal Building, 1 Saint Mary’s Place.

Agendas, minutes and meeting audio are posted on the township’s Zoning Board of Adjustment page. Questions can go to the Planning and Zoning board secretary at (973) 625-8300, ext. 246.
