Former Denville Fire Department Chief Robert “Bob” Matschke Passes Away

Former Denville Fire Department Chief Robert “Bob” Matschke has passed away, according to an announcement from the Denville Volunteer Fire Department.

Matschke joined the Denville Fire Department in 1965 at the age of 24. From 1966 to 1968, he took a military leave of absence to serve in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he remained actively involved with the department until his passing.

For 61 of the department’s 100 years, Matschke was a dedicated member of both the department and the association. He was also a lifelong member of the Main Street Fire Company.

Throughout his career, Matschke served in numerous leadership roles. He was appointed lieutenant in 1972 and captain in 1973. He later served as Third Assistant Chief in 1986, Second Assistant Chief in 1987, First Assistant Chief in 1988, and Department Chief in 1989. In 1990, he served as Acting Second Assistant Chief before again serving as Department Chief from 1992 to 1995. On the association side, Matschke served as president from 1972 to 1974.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a funeral service beginning at 3:00 PM. Services will take place at Norman Dean Home for Services, located at 16 Righter Avenue, Denville, NJ 07834.

Community members are asked to keep Chief Matschke and his family in their thoughts and prayers.
