Denville commuters who rely on NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Lines have two changes to plan around in the coming weeks. Track work is causing potential delays through Friday, May 22, and a system wide NJ Transit rail schedule update takes effect on Sunday, May 31.

Track work through May 22

According to NJ Transit travel alerts, the Morris and Essex Lines saw track work over the weekend of Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. The same maintenance window continues on weekdays, with potential delays expected through Friday, May 22.

Riders are advised to build extra time into their trips and check service status before leaving home. A separate weekend advisory covered Saturday and Sunday service on the same line.

New rail schedule starts May 31

The May 31 update is part of NJ Transit’s system wide rail schedule change, posted to the agency’s travel alerts page on Thursday, May 14. Riders on every commuter rail line, including the Morris and Essex Lines, should review updated timetables before traveling that weekend.

Earlier this year, Morris and Essex Lines service was reshaped by the Portal North Bridge cutover in Hudson County. From mid February through March 14, some weekday trains bound for New York Penn Station were rerouted to Hoboken, with onward connections by PATH and NY Waterway ferry. Regular weekday and weekend schedules resumed on Sunday, March 15.

What it means for Denville riders

Denville Station sits on the Morristown Line, which together with the Gladstone Branch makes up NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Lines. The station serves residents of Denville and the surrounding Morris County area, with service to Hoboken Terminal and Midtown Direct trains to New York Penn Station.

Riders are encouraged to use the NJ Transit Mobile App for real time alerts and updated timetables. The full list of current advisories is available on the NJ Transit travel alerts page.
