Denville families with e-bikes have new state rules to follow this summer. The Denville Police Department is reminding residents that New Jersey’s updated e-bike law takes effect in July 2026, ending a grace period that began when the law passed earlier this year.

Under the new requirements, riders must be at least 15 years old, and a helmet is mandatory for every rider regardless of age. Operators also need a valid driver license, e-bike license, or e-bike permit.

The state now splits electric two-wheelers into two groups. A low-speed electric bicycle assists only while the rider is pedaling and stops assisting at 20 miles per hour. A motorized bicycle is throttle-capable up to 28 miles per hour. Both must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Motorized bicycles also need insurance, while low-speed e-bikes do not.

The Motor Vehicle Commission notes that e-bike licensing and registration are not yet available, and riders can sign up on the agency’s e-bike page for updates on when those services open.

Local police departments across Morris County have said the grace period ends and full enforcement, including fines, begins July 20, 2026. Officials are urging riders to learn the rules now, before the deadline, especially with more young riders out on bikes during summer break.

Families can review the full requirements on the NJ MVC e-bike page and the Denville Police Department advisory.
