Three Rivers Drive in Jefferson Township closes to through traffic on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, as Morris County begins replacing the bridge that carries the road over Weldon Brook.
The county announced the project on July 27. The closure takes effect after the morning rush, and drivers will follow a signed detour of about 2.5 miles using Bowling Green Parkway, Route 15, Espanong Road and Venetian Drive. Construction is expected to run roughly six months, weather permitting.
The existing bridge is a single span timber structure built in 1970. County officials said the timber deck has decayed, the timber sidewalks have settled and the foundation area has lost material, leaving replacement as the most practical long term fix. The new structure will be a three sided precast concrete frame with precast wing walls and a four bar steel railing.
The project costs $1,169,082 and is funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation through its Local Bridges Fund Program. CMS Construction of Plainfield holds the contract. The bridge belongs to Jefferson Township, which paid for the design, while Morris County is overseeing construction in partnership with the township.
It is the second county bridge job to land on local drivers in a matter of days. Morris Avenue in Denville is scheduled to close on or about Thursday, Aug. 6, for a deck replacement on the bridge over Beaver Brook, a project expected to take about two months.
