Pleasant Hill Road in the Flanders section of Mount Olive will close to through traffic on Monday, Aug. 31, after the morning rush hour, as Morris County replaces two aging bridges over Drakes Brook.
Cars will follow a signed detour using Reger Road and Ironia Road. Trucks get a separate detour by way of Furnace Road and Route 206. The county expects the work to take about four months, weather permitting.
The two bridges sit next to each other near the Flanders Valley Golf Course. The one closest to the north side of Pleasant Hill Road, nearest Ironia Road, dates to 1900 and has severe rusting and section loss in its steel beams. The second, built in 1940, has rusting beams of its own plus voids in its foundations.
The 1900 span will be rebuilt as a prestressed concrete beam bridge with a concrete deck, stone-faced parapets and wingwalls. The 1940 bridge will get a three-sided precast concrete frame with precast wingwalls and bridge railings, topped with an asphalt overlay.
Konkus Corporation of Hillsborough is handling the $2,608,664 job under contract with Morris County.
County officials are advising drivers to expect delays, use caution and plan alternate routes while the work is underway.
