Denville is seeking state money to build and upgrade sidewalks along Savage Road and Morris Avenue, from Gardner Field to Morris Catholic High School, under a resolution on the Township Council’s agenda for Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Resolution R-26-177 would authorize the township to apply to the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 2027 Safe Routes to School program, according to the meeting packet posted on the township’s council agendas and minutes page. It would also let the mayor, township administrator and municipal clerk sign the documents needed to submit the application and, if money is awarded, the grant agreement.

The resolution states that the township promotes and encourages pedestrian and bicycle access for students and residents. It does not include a cost estimate or a construction timeline, and an application does not guarantee funding.

Safe Routes to School pays for infrastructure projects that help K-12 students walk and bike to school safely. Counties, municipalities and school districts can apply, and the program is run by NJDOT’s Division of Local Resources and Community Development with the state’s three metropolitan planning organizations. Applications for the 2027 round are due Nov. 13 through NJDOT’s online grant system, according to the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.

The council meets at 7:30 p.m. The same agenda includes the introduction of an ordinance to manage the handoff as Business Administrator Steve Ward prepares to retire at the end of the year. Families looking for more on local schools can find it in our Denville schools guide.
