The cost of Denville’s galvanized water main replacement project is set to climb by $200,000 to pay for more off-duty police officers at work sites than the township originally planned for, according to a resolution on the Township Council’s Oct. 6, 2026 agenda.

The change order, Resolution R-26-172, raises the township’s contract with Regal Utility Services Inc. from $3,928,339.70 to $4,128,339.70. The council awarded the original contract on June 23, 2026.

According to the resolution, the police presence requested for the project is greater than what the bid specifications anticipated, so the allowance for off-duty officers had to grow. The township’s chief financial officer certified that money is available in the budget to cover the increase.

The project is funded through Ordinance 14-25, a bond ordinance adopted on July 15, 2025, that appropriated $7.3 million for the galvanized water main replacement work.

The change order was listed on the non-consent portion of the agenda, which means it was set for its own vote rather than being bundled with routine items. Minutes from the Oct. 6 meeting have not been posted yet, but the full Oct. 6 agenda packet and an audio recording are available on the township’s council agendas and minutes page. We will update this story once the minutes confirm the vote.

The same meeting brought the introduction of Ordinance 22-26, the land use code update that includes the township’s proposed ban on AI data centers and crypto mining along with looser fence rules. A public hearing on that ordinance is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2026.

Separately, the Denville Water Utility started its fall hydrant flushing on Oct. 13. Crews will work weekdays from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for about three to four weeks, so residents may notice some temporary water discoloration.
