The public is invited to a Constitution Day tree planting at Central Park of Morris County on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, where 13 trees will go in the ground to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The Morris County Park Commission and the New Jersey Arborists Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture are hosting the ceremony, billed on the invitation as the Grove of 13, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the park in Parsippany-Troy Hills, directly east of Denville.
Each tree stands for one of the original 13 colonies. The county says the species were picked to represent each colony while also holding up in northern New Jersey’s climate, so the grove has a real chance of outliving the ceremony.
A time capsule goes into the ground with the trees and is set to be opened in 2076, when the country turns 300. The county says it will hold a letter to future generations documenting the history and health of New Jersey’s forests in 2026, how the trees were chosen, best practices in tree care, a vision for the future of cities and towns, and a message to whoever opens it 50 years from now.
Local and state representatives are scheduled to speak on the stewardship of the nation’s natural resources and the job of preserving public parks and green spaces.
Constitution Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
The planting happens rain or shine, and the county is telling attendees to dress for outdoor field conditions. An invitation and site map are posted with the county announcement.
