A Flanders man is facing a drunken driving charge after Denville police found his vehicle stopped at a green light in the early morning hours of July 9, authorities said.
An officer on patrol at about 1:43 a.m. spotted a vehicle that failed to move after a traffic signal turned green, according to police. When the car remained stopped through a full light cycle, the officer approached the driver, later identified as 49-year-old Gilberto Castillo of Flanders.
Castillo showed signs of intoxication during the stop, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and taken to Denville Police Headquarters for processing.
Along with the DWI charge, police issued Castillo motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, careless driving and delaying traffic. He was released pending a future appearance in Denville Township Municipal Court.
The department recently reported handling 2,899 calls for service in a single month, a snapshot of the steady volume its officers manage on local roads. In other recent police news, three teens last seen at the Denville train station were found safe after a brief search.
Charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
