The Denville Township Police Department is putting New Jersey’s rewritten e-bike law in front of residents, and the rules now reach almost every electric bicycle in town.
The department posted a notice titled “Update: 2026 New Jersey E-Bike Laws” in the Latest News block on its website, along with a one-page flyer breaking down what changed. The flyer’s headline point: all e-bikes are now classified as motorized bicycles.
Under the state law, no one under 15 may operate one. Riders 17 and older need a valid New Jersey driver’s license. Riders who are 15 or 16 have to get a motorized bicycle license from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
Every e-bike has to be registered with the MVC. Registration comes with two license plate stickers that go on both sides of the front fork. Denville police say riders should be able to present a license, registration and insurance documentation while riding, and that first year registration fees are waived.
The flyer also flags a few provisions riders may not expect. Online sales of high powered e-bikes are temporarily banned for one year, selling modification kits that increase speed is now illegal, and helmet use and safety gear are encouraged and mandated where applicable.
The grace period to register, insure and license an e-bike under the new law ran through July 19, 2026, so the requirements are already in force.
