Morris County is asking residents, businesses and schools to switch on green lights from Wednesday, Nov. 4, through Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, as a visible thank you to the people who served.
The Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution Oct. 28 naming those nine days Operation Green Light for Veterans Week. The national campaign, run by the National Association of Counties and county veterans service officers, normally ends on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Morris County tacked on one more night so the week wraps with its own veterans ceremony on Nov. 12. This is the county’s second year taking part.
The idea is simple: a green light tells veterans they are seen and points them toward help. The county’s resolution also marks the nation’s 250th anniversary and Morris County’s Revolutionary War roots at Jockey Hollow.
Eight county sites will glow green all week: the Veterans Services Office and the Office of Temporary Assistance on West Hanover Avenue in Morris Township, the Law and Public Safety Complex and the Morris County 9/11 Memorial in Parsippany-Troy Hills, the historic courthouse and the Administration and Records Building in Morristown, the Morris County Library in Whippany and the Human Services Complex in Morris Plains.
To join in, put a green bulb in a window, porch light or lobby, then post a photo with #operationgreenlight and tag @MorrisCountyNJ. Details are in the county’s official announcement.
The week ends with the county’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at 10 Court St. in Morristown, where commissioners will award Distinguished Military Service Medals to six local veterans, including Denville’s Raymond Jones. The ceremony will also stream on the county’s Facebook page.
Veterans and families can reach the county Veterans Services Office at 973-285-6866 or MCVets@co.morris.nj.us for help with benefits, housing, jobs, health care and transportation. The office recently hosted a visit from New Jersey’s first statewide veteran advocate.
