A 21-year-old Elizabeth man is charged with eluding after Denville police say he drove on the wrong side of Franklin Avenue during the Oct. 22 morning commute and then tried to get away from officers who moved to stop him.
Police received calls that morning about a black Chrysler 300 traveling against traffic on Franklin Avenue and nearly causing crashes, according to the Denville Police Department. Officers reached the area around 7:15 a.m., found the car and saw the driver commit several traffic violations.
When officers tried to pull the car over, the driver attempted to elude them, police said. The car eventually stopped on Swenson Avenue, where officers identified the driver as Canye H. Culver of Elizabeth.
Culver was arrested and processed at Denville Police Headquarters. He is charged with eluding and obstruction and also received motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, careless driving, improper passing, failing to keep to a marked lane, failing to signal, failing to report an address change and a noisy muffler.
He was released pending a future appearance in Morris County Superior Court.
It is the latest traffic arrest in town this fall. Earlier in October, Denville officers charged two Morristown men with DWI, and the department logged 1,162 motor vehicle encounters in September alone, according to our September 2026 police recap.
Residents who see a wrong-way or dangerous driver should call 911. The Denville Police Department’s non-emergency line is 973-627-4900.
Charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
