Drivers who use Howard Boulevard near Interstate 80 in Mount Arlington should plan for delays tonight. Overnight traffic stoppages are scheduled there from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, under an NJDOT traffic advisory shared by Morris County.
Crews will briefly halt traffic in both directions between the I-80 bridges and a point just past the intersection at the Mount Arlington train station. During the stops, they will restripe the road, move the travel lanes and switch on new traffic signals. New Jersey State Police will assist, and at least one lane is set to stay open each way.
The timing could shift with the weather. The National Weather Service forecast for our area calls for showers and possible thunderstorms Friday night.
Once the work wraps up by 6 a.m. Saturday, Howard Boulevard reopens in a new traffic pattern that will stay in place through December 2026. Northbound lanes move to the right, toward the shoulder, while southbound lanes shift left toward the northbound side.
If a detour becomes necessary, southbound Howard Boulevard traffic will be sent west on I-80 to Exit 28 and east on Route 46. From there, drivers take the Lake Hopatcong ramp to Shippenport Road, then Landing Road (County Route 631) to Route 10, which connects back to Howard Boulevard and Commerce Boulevard.
