Size and geography
Denville covers about 12.74 square miles, of which 11.99 square miles is land and roughly 0.75 square miles is water. That water is a big part of the town’s identity. Denville has four private membership lake communities, Cedar Lake, Indian Lake, Rock Ridge Lake and Lake Arrowhead, developed about a century ago as summer colonies for city families. The Rockaway River and the Den Brook run through town. See our lakes, parks and trails guide for public places to get outside.
Government and mayor
Denville uses the Faulkner Act mayor-council form of government. Voters elect a mayor and a seven-member township council to four-year terms in partisan elections held in odd-numbered years: four council members represent the township’s four wards, and three serve at large. The current mayor is Thomas W. (Tom) Andes, who took office January 1, 2012, and whose term runs through December 31, 2027. A short history
Lenape people lived and hunted in the area long before Dutch and English settlers arrived in the late 1600s. In the 1700s, iron forges along the Den Brook and the Rockaway River drove the local economy and supplied munitions during the Revolution; General William Winds, one of George Washington’s generals, was a Denville resident. The Morris Canal came through in the early 1830s, and the railroad followed, drawing families to settle near the depots at Denville and Mount Tabor.
For most of its early history Denville was the southern district of Rockaway Township. By 1912, farmers tired of paying Rockaway Township taxes pushed to separate, and on April 14, 1913, Governor Fielder signed the act creating Denville Township. That year the new town had 62 registered voters, about 58 farms and 230 houses. Nobody is certain where the name comes from: one theory credits explorer Daniel Denton, another the animal dens in the swampy meadows along the Den Brook. The township’s official history page has much more.
Today Denville’s largest employer is Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital on Pocono Road, and its downtown along Broadway, Main Street and Diamond Spring Road is known for independent shops and restaurants.
