The Denville Police Department has launched an online reporting portal that lets residents file reports for certain non-emergency crimes and incidents without waiting for an officer to respond.
The department announced the launch on its website, describing the portal as a way for residents to report select non-emergency crimes and incidents directly through denvillepolice.gov. Anyone who needs immediate police assistance should still call 911.
The reporting portal lists more than a dozen incident types eligible for online filing. Those include identity theft, theft, theft of a bicycle, credit card theft, fraud, embezzlement and bad checks, criminal mischief, harassment, lost property, shoplifting, child custody complaints, follow up reports, and reports needed only for insurance claims.
There are limits on what the portal will take. Simple assault can be filed online only when the victim knows the offender, and not in domestic violence cases. Harassment reports are excluded when they involve domestic violence, threats with a weapon, or bomb threats. Lost firearms and other weapons cannot be reported through the portal. Before the form opens, filers must acknowledge that filing a false police report is a criminal offense.
Identity theft carries its own exception. A Denville resident can report identity theft through the portal no matter where the theft actually happened.
The portal joins a run of resident facing services the department has rolled out recently, including free home security assessments for residents who want a walkthrough of their property.
