Two Denville landmarks will open to the public for free on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, as part of the 17th annual Pathways of History Fall Tour hosted by the Morris County Historical Society.
Denville Now has also covered other local history efforts, including a new marker tracing the Revolutionary War trail through Morris County.
The Ayres/Knuth Farm at 25 Cooper Road will be open both days from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Settled around 1793, the farm is billed by its foundation as the oldest continually operating farm in Morris County, and it is listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
Visitors on Saturday can also stop by a free opening reception for the Highlands Farming art exhibit at the farm from 2 to 4 p.m. The traveling show features artwork about farming in the Highlands region of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
The Denville Historical Society will open the Second Union School on Openaki Road on Saturday only, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to the Morris County Heritage Commission marker at the site, children attended the schoolhouse from 1861 until 1908, when the Third Union School opened across the road.
Just over the township line, the Mount Tabor Historical Society will open the Richardson History House on Sunday as part of the tour.
The tour is self-guided and runs rain or shine. Visitors can start at any stop, and admission is free at every site. Saturday sites make up the Blue Tour, Sunday sites make up the Red Tour, and a handful, including the Ayres/Knuth Farm, are open both days. Organizers with the Morris County Historical Society said a record number of locations are taking part this year as part of the county’s America 250 celebration.
Organizers note that food and drink are not allowed inside the historic buildings, and public restrooms are generally not available.
