Denville Scout Troop 17, VFW Post 2519 and American Legion Post 390 are hosting a USA Flag Retirement Ceremony this Veterans Day weekend at Fireman’s Field. The ceremony is Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at 3 p.m. Residents are invited to bring any American flags they wish to properly retire.
The free community event was submitted to Denville Now by Douglas Gabel of Morris Hills Regional District. Organizers framed it as a Veterans Day weekend gathering for neighbors who want worn, faded or otherwise unserviceable flags retired with respect.

Where is Fireman’s Field?
Fireman’s Field sits next to the Denville Township Fire Department Main Street firehouse at 2 Indian Road, at the corner of Route 53 and Indian Road across from the ACME shopping center. It is the same field used for the department’s annual Firemen’s Carnival.
Who is hosting
Three local groups are listed as hosts:
- Denville Scout Troop 17, a longtime Denville Boy Scout troop that has taken part in other local civic ceremonies.
- VFW Post 2519, Denville’s Veterans of Foreign Wars post, based at 71 Ford Road.
- American Legion Post 390 (Denville Memorial), at 9 Legion Place in Denville.
Those addresses come from the posts’ public listings. The ceremony itself is at Fireman’s Field, not at the post homes.
What a flag retirement ceremony is
When an American flag is worn, faded or no longer fit for display, the U.S. Flag Code says it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Scout units and veterans groups often hold public ceremonies so residents can turn in flags for proper retirement instead of throwing them away.
Organizers asked people to bring any American flags they want retired. No other program details, such as how many flags will be accepted or whether there will be a rain plan, were included in the submission.
How to get there
Fireman’s Field is a short walk from downtown Denville. Street and lot parking near the Main Street firehouse and the ACME plaza on Route 53 usually serves events at the field. For more things happening around town, see the Denville NJ events calendar.
