Denville police have charged a 69-year-old township man with theft and illegal dumping after officers caught him trying to haul lumber out of the Dickerson’s Corner parking lot before dawn on Saturday, Oct. 3, according to a Denville Police Department press release.

Officers spotted the man, identified as Gary Buchanan of Denville, at about 5:19 a.m. Police said their follow-up investigation found he had been taking multiple pieces of lumber from the property and dropping items into a dumpster there over roughly two months.

Buchanan was charged with theft by unlawful taking under N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a and with illegal dumping under Denville Township Ordinance 332-13. He was arrested, processed at Denville Police Headquarters and released pending a future date in Denville Municipal Court.

In a separate release, police said officers pulled over a car on Route 10 East at about midnight on Thursday, Oct. 15, after seeing it fail to stay in its lane and follow another vehicle too closely. The driver, Edilson Marroquin-Martinez, 21, of Morristown, showed signs of possible impairment and was arrested after standardized field sobriety testing.

He received summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain a lane, an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, following too closely, and failing to have his registration and insurance card. He was also released pending a Denville Municipal Court appearance.

The stop follows the Route 10 DWI charge against a New York City driver that we reported earlier this month. For a wider look at what officers handle in town, see the department’s September call recap.

Residents can now file select non-emergency reports through the Denville Police Department’s online reporting portal. For emergencies, call 911.

Charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
