What MCVTS is

The district was founded in 1969 as a share time trades school and added its first full time programs in 2000. Students in a full time academy attend it instead of their local high school for all four years, take their career classes alongside the state’s required academics, and graduate with a diploma from the Morris County Vocational School District. The district reports about 755 full time students and 360 share time students on the Denville campus, drawn from 26 Morris County towns and 12 communities in neighboring counties. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2013.

The 11 academies at the Denville campus

  • Academy for Animal Science
  • Academy for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Engineering
  • Academy for Biotechnology
  • Academy for Computer and Information Sciences
  • Academy for Design
  • Academy for Education and Learning
  • Academy for Global Commerce: Finance and Supply Chain Management
  • Academy for Government and Legal Studies (Early College)
  • Academy for Health Care Science
  • Academy for Law and Public Safety
  • Academy for Multimedia

MCVSD also runs academies inside partner high schools, and students apply to them through the same application: Math, Science and Engineering at Morris Hills High School; Aviation and Sports Medicine at Roxbury High School; Business Administration (Early College) at Randolph High School with County College of Morris; Environmental Science at Jefferson Township High School; and Performing Arts (Dance, or Theatre Arts and Musical Theatre) at Morris Knolls High School.

How admission works for eighth graders

Admission is competitive and based on a scored rubric, followed by a random selection among qualified applicants when there are more of them than seats. According to the 2026 admissions handbook, the criteria are:

  • Seventh grade final grades in English, math, science and social studies (honors classes get no extra weight)
  • Seventh grade NJSLA scores in English language arts and math
  • An in person admissions math test: one hour, paper and pencil, no calculator, covering eighth grade standards (Math, Science and Engineering applicants take a computer based Accuplacer test instead)
  • A teacher recommendation form
  • An audition, for Performing Arts applicants only

Applicants must list a second choice academy and may list a third. Several programs cannot be chosen as a second or third choice: Math, Science and Engineering; Health Care Science; Performing Arts; Government and Legal Studies; Environmental Science; and Business Administration. Math, Science and Engineering applicants must be taking or have finished Algebra 1. Students with an IEP or 504 plan can receive their approved accommodations on the admissions test.

Fall 2027 application timeline

The district scheduled these fall 2026 sessions, with free registration through the full time admissions page:

Is MCVTS tuition free?

For Morris County families, yes. MCVSD is a public school district, and under New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 18A:54-20.1) the board of education in the student’s home town pays tuition to the county vocational district for each accepted student. Out of county students are considered only when seats remain and their own county does not offer the same program, and they go to the end of the waitlist rather than into the random selection.

Transportation

MCVSD does not run its own buses to its high school programs. The district says the student’s sending district is responsible for transportation and is the main contact for bus questions, so families should contact the district that would otherwise educate the student. For most Denville teens that is the Morris Hills Regional District, which runs Morris Knolls High School. The district does run a courtesy late bus that leaves the Denville campus at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday on full days, for students in sports, clubs or after school help, with a limited set of stops.

Share time programs for juniors and seniors

Students who stay at their home high school can still attend MCVTS for half of each day in 11th and 12th grade. These two year share time programs cover allied health, auto service technology, carpentry, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary arts and hospitality, cyber security, electrical trades, engineering design and advanced manufacturing, exercise science, fundamentals of food service, HVAC, plumbing and pipefitting, and welding. Most run on the Denville campus, with a few at County College of Morris and Pequannock High School, and many lead to industry recognized credentials. Students interested in share time should start with their high school counselor.
